Thermo-physical characterization of Hexadecane during the solid/liquid phase change

In this study we provide a multi-physical and multi-scale characterization of an organic Phase Change Material (PCM), i.e. hexadecane, for both its liquid solid phase during the transition. Macroscopic thermal physical properties provided are density viscosity in conductivity heat capacity each phase. Further macroscopic measurements were done by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which was used to obtain first estimation temperatures at solid/liquid transition occurs. DSC results present hysteresis between melting (Tm) solidification (Ts) temperature. A similar also collected rotational oscillatory rheometry change, where Ts is found depend on applied cooling rate. Moreover, near forming structure continuously affected conditions imposed rheometer (i.e. shear rate or stress) breakage crystals takes place even weak stress tested (0.001 Pa).
